Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is not the first Pakistani artiste to have been embroiled in a controversy with the Indian authorities. The singer who has voiced some of Bollywood's biggest chartbusters finds his name added to the list of controversial artistes from across the border. Here's a look at a few other instances were the Indo-Pak cultural ties have made headlines for all the wrong reasons.
In December last year eight flats and parking spaces owned by singer Adnan Sami were confiscated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) as the singer is not allowed to acquire property in India.
While Pakistani singers and stand up comedians are a regular feature in Bollywood and on Indian television, their appearances haven't been free from controversy. In 2009 well-known Pakistani comedian Shakeel Siddiqui who was a part of 'Comedy Circus' on an Indian entertainment channel, was threatened by the MNS and asked to return to Pakistan.
More recently the inclusion of Veena Malik and Nawazish Ali from across the border as Bigg Boss housemates met with protests by right wing groups. But it's not just right wing political groups who are opposed to Pakistani artistes performing in India. Popular Bollywood singer Abhijeet and Ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh too have been vocal about the reception given to Pakistani singers in India.
While efforts like 'Aman Ki Asha' to revitalise cultural relations between India and Pakistan may be a step in the right direction, incidents like Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's detention might just affect the cultural and diplomatic relations between both the countries adversely.
