Weekend Forecast: Looks like another close game for LSU-Arkansas

Posted in : Sports

(added few months ago!)

The penultimate weekend of the regular season brings another huge showdown that will go a long way to decide the participants in the BCS championship game. No. 1 LSU hosts No. 3 Arkansas in a matchup that could make the winner of the SEC West very simple or push the decision until Sunday.

The easy solution comes if the Tigers win to advance to the conference championship game against Georgia. A win by the Razorbacks likely would create a three-way tie with Alabama also in the mix. The representative in Atlanta would then be decided by the BCS standings released Sunday. That should create an electric atmosphere in Baton Rouge come Friday afternoon.

If a huge game with title implications isn't enough for your plate on Thanksgiving weekend, there are plenty of critical rivalry games on tap.  There's the Iron Bowl between No. 2 Alabama and Auburn, with the Tide needing a win to stay in SEC and national title contention. No. 16 Michigan and Ohio State renew their heated rivalry in Ann Arbor.

No. 12 Wisconsin hosts No. 19 Penn State, with the winner advancing to the Big Ten title game. No. 4 Virginia Tech travels to No. 25 Virginia to decide the ACC Coastal title. No. 9 Oregon must beat Oregon State in the Civil War to win the Pac-12 North. No. 14 Georgia preps for its appearance in the SEC title game at No. 21 Georgia Tech. No. 23 West Virginia plays Pittsburgh in the Backyard Brawl with both teams possibly heading to new conferences next season.

Not on the menu for this week's predictions are both Florida-Florida State and Texas-Texas A&M because all four teams are unranked after each started the season in the Top 25.

The matchup between the Aggies and Longhorns is also notable because it is the last time they will meet for the foreseeable future with A&M headed to the SEC and Texas not inclined to schedule its rival. For those interested, the Forecast likes Florida State and Texas A&M to win.

No. 1 LSU vs. No. 3 Arkansas, 2:30 p.m. (Friday)
When the Tigers and Razorbacks have met the past six seasons, the only game decided by more than five points was last year's 31-23 win by Arkansas. Tyler Wilson and the Hogs should be able to move the ball against LSU. The question is if the Razorbacks can stand up to the power running of the Tigers. LSU 27, Arkansas 20.

No. 2 Alabama at Auburn, 3:30 p.m.
For one full year, the Crimson Tide have been waiting to face the Tigers after blowing a 24-point lead in the Iron Bowl and watching their rival win the national title. The shoe is now on the other foot with Auburn hoping to spoil Alabama's championship hopes. Alabama 30, Auburn 16.

No. 4 Virginia Tech at No. 25 Virginia, 3:30 p.m.
Hokies quarterback Logan Thomas has steadily improved since struggling against Clemson last month. All he has to do is beat the Cavaliers, who have won four in a row, for a chance to get redemption against the Tigers in the ACC title game. Virginia Tech 23, Virginia 17.

No. 5 Stanford vs. No. 24 Notre Dame, 8 p.m.
For one week, Andrew Luck was out of his familiar position of Heisman front-runner. Now he can make a big final impression on voters against the Irish, who might harbor hopes of a BCS berth with a big win that impresses voters. Stanford 35, Notre Dame 24.

No. 7 Houston at Tulsa, noon (Friday)
No team played a tougher non-conference schedule than the Golden Hurricane, who faced Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Boise State in the first month of the season. They haven't lost since and that experience will serve them well against Case Keenum. Tulsa 38, Houston 35.

No. 8 Boise State vs. Wyoming, 2 p.m.
If Houston does lose, the Broncos could be an attractive at-large pick for the BCS as long as TCU does not qualify for an automatic berth. But they have to take care of business this week against the Cowboys. Boise State 47, Wyoming 20.

No. 9 Oregon vs. Oregon State, 3:30 p.m.
The lure of playing in the Rose Bowl and a visit from the rival Beavers should help if the Ducks are still smarting after last week's loss to USC. Oregon 41, Oregon State 20.

No. 10 Michigan State at Northwestern, noon
A dangerous situation for the Spartans, who already have wrapped up the Big Ten Legends title. They'll be pushed by the Wildcats this week if they do not take the game seriously. Michigan State 30, Northwestern 24.

No. 11 Oklahoma vs. Iowa State, noon
The Cyclones pulled one major upset against a team from Oklahoma last week. Don't be surprised if lightning strikes twice with the Sooners in a tough emotional spot after their loss to Baylor and Oklahoma State on deck. Oklahoma 35, Iowa State 20.

No. 12 Wisconsin vs. No. 19 Penn State, 3:30 p.m.
The Nittany Lions have handled a difficult situation with resiliency and now are one win away from the Big Ten title game. Beating the Badgers in Madison, however, will take their best game of the season. Wisconsin 30, Penn State 19.

No. 13 South Carolina vs. No. 17 Clemson, 7:45 p.m.
The last time these two teams met with each having nine wins was 1984. While the Tigers struggled last week in a meaningless game against N.C. State, they'll be plenty motivated against the Gamecocks. Clemson 26, South Carolina 24.

No. 14 Georgia at No. 21 Georgia Tech, noon
Only Houston and LSU have a longer current win streak than the Bulldogs. Quarterback Aaron Murray should help stretch their run to 10. Georgia 31, Georgia Tech 23.

No. 16 Michigan vs. Ohio State, noon
It's been eight years and more than 2,900 days since the Wolverines beat the Buckeyes. They couldn't ask for a better scenario to end the streak with OSU struggling on offense and their defense showing great improvement under Brady Hoke and Greg Mattison. Michigan 27, Ohio State 13.

No. 20 Baylor vs. Texas Tech, 7 p.m.
The Red Raiders are winless since beating Oklahoma last month and have been outscored 190-60 in those four games. Robert Griffin III and the Bears offense are too good to allow last week's defeat of the Sooners to derail them in a similar fashion. Baylor 49, Texas Tech 30.

No. 22 Nebraska vs. Iowa, noon (Friday)
The addition of the Cornhuskers to the Big Ten was expected to create a rivalry with the Hawkeyes even though the schools have only met twice in 29 seasons. A great game would certainly be a nice way to start. Nebraska 24, Iowa 20.

No. 23 West Virginia vs. Pittsburgh, 7 p.m.
After some curious stumbles, the Mountaineers can still salvage the Big East title and a BCS berth. But they must beat the Panthers, who would love nothing more than to spoil WVU's season. West Virginia 27, Pittsburgh 20.

Chitrangada speaks her mind on controversies

Posted in : Show Biz

(added few months ago!)

In an industry where actresses are known for the catfights, an honest compliment from a talented actress to another is rare yet admirable. But then that’s Chitrangada Singh Randawa, the actress who has always talked straight – be it rubbishing a rumour or giving due credit to people when deserved.

Chitrangada speaks her mind on controversies

The actor will soon be seen in a big budget commercial film, 'Desi Boyz' opposite Akshay Kumar.
This is Chitrangada’s first big budget movie where she plays the role of a gullible professor who can’t seem to forget her first crush. And while any other in place of Chitrangada will be talking of nothing else but the movie, not this actress. In a no hold bar interview the actress insists on speaking on everything else, but her film. And we relent, with a little twist of our own (we did ask her about the fim!).

Tell us, how difficult it is for a married actress to get lead roles?
Yes, barriers occur sometimes for married actress. But then I believe it is also important to see how desirable you are to the audience now. There are many factors at play, like how much time and effort are you willing to give to a performance? How well can you execute the director’s imagination on screen? Your commitment to work is very important. The industry wants to see how much committed and responsible you are. You should be able to convince them over that. In these terms I feel I have a strong edge as marriage has never stopped me from realizing my dream, and I have realized some of them.

Let’s talk about the ever-increasing competition in the industry. Is it unnerving?
In Bollywood, the competition among the actresses is tough but I think there is enough work for everybody. There are many directors and producers these days. Yes, good relations often plays a vital role in getting you work, but I believe more than often it’s your success that speaks for itself. People who matter often see how good you are at your work than your relation. It’s also important to carry on with your impact and improve on it as time passes.

What’s your take on controversies? Are they for real or just created?
Controversies have never followed me much. But I think it’s on how you handle it. In my opinion, you can either react or ignore it. Sometimes it may work, other times it may not be that helpful. But today the audiences are too smart. They exactly know when you try to fool them. But when the controversy is genuine it is good because it helps.

How involved is your husband Jyoti Randhawa in your career? Do you consult him before taking up a project?
My husband Jyoti does not understand anything about cinema or the industry. He has no idea. So there is no question for consulting him. The way it works for me is this: Sometimes I do not like his golf shots and sometimes he does not like my onscreen shots.

Why does Bollywood produce so few heroine centric films?
It is the audience who are supposed to be blamed for these because they give so much importance to the hero. They want to see more men-oriented films. But I think Vidya Balan is changing this trend. Her role in The Dirty Picture is bringing the female-centered film trend. I think the directors should also start writing on such subjects, it’s about time.

Tell us more about your first item number in ‘Joker’…
The reason I am doing the item number in Joker is because I wanted to show my dancing skills. Why have I not done in the past? Because I have never got the opportunity to showcase my dancing skills. I have also learnt kathak for two years! ‘Kafrina’ is the name of my item song in Joker. Farrah Khan is choreographing the song and I’m excited about it. The song will also have Akshay Kumar matching my steps.

Are you as modern as you on screen characters?
Modern is different from Western. Modern is when you think progressive and feel independent. As a woman, I feel I should be independent and feel confident in what I am doing. I feel I am more modern than western. I am shy but I am trying to get on it.

Do you ever regret not being a part of Race2 and Krrish2?
I was never in ‘Race2’, but I was doing Krrish2 and it did slip out from my hand. The film was getting postponed and every time it did, they demanded bulk dates. It had an international crew and technicians. And every time schedules changed, there was just too much of coordination required, which I couldn’t accommodate because I had other commitments as well. (Rakesh) Roshan sir and I sat for a long time to find an alternative, but it was just not working out so I backed out of Krrish2. Even now it is postponed but I really regret missing it.

What attracts you the most towards Indian men?
Indian men are very emotional. I like their attachment towards their mothers. The unattractive thing about them is they are over possessive. They just cannot seem to give that kind of freedom to their partners.
It’s the first time that you and Akshay Kumar were paired together. Share the experience with us.
I was little nervous on the first day when I saw Akshay, but later I found him a really good guy to work with. He does not impose and yet is extremely helpful. He plays prank all the time on the sets.
Director Sudhir Mishra gave you your first break in Bollywood. How was it working with him?
The best thing about Sidhir Mishra is that he makes a film real. He does not try to soften the character by thinking about the audience. He will keep them as real to life as possible, no matter how it looks.

Next you will be seen in…
My upcoming movies are ‘Inkaar’, which is oppostie Arjun Rampal. The movie is about sexual harassment and it is directed by Sudhir Mishra. It’s just a working title, I am told. The second movie is opposite John Abraham called ‘I Me Aur Main’, a romantic drama.

Shah Rukh Khan' s in no mood to create controversies

Posted in : Show Biz

(added few months ago!)

Looks like Shah Rukh Khan is neither in a mood to forgive or forget nor does he want to create controversies. Recently, Anil Kapoor with who Shah Rukh has not had the best of relations, claimed that the credit of creating the stardom of actor Shah Rukh Khan indirectly goes to him. Anil revealed on Preity Zinta's chat show that Shah Rukh was offered Baazigarafter he had rejected the film.

"If it had not been for me, today Shah Rukh wouldn't have been where he is," said Anil as Preity looked at him in amazement. Anil indicated that he couldn't spare the time for Baazigaras he had other projects to complete.

As we all know, Baazigar (1993) played a big role in establishing Shah Rukh as the next big star in Bollywood in the anti-hero mould. Shah Rukh followed up his Baazigaract with a few anti-hero roles like in Darrand Anjaamwhich garnered a lot of critical acclaim, before Aditya Chopra's Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayengechanged that and established him as the quintessential lover boy. Baazigarwas the first film to mark his pairing with actor Kajol.

And when Shah Rukh was asked to react on Anil's statement, he simply avoided taking any names and replied: "It is not just one person, but there are billions of people in the country who are responsible in making me successful. Then I have worked with the nicest of people in my career my directors, technicians, actorsthey are all responsible for me being where I am," said SRK.

Further, Shah Rukh again avoided taking the name of his arch rival Aamir Khan when asked to comment about Aamir's "nice" gesture. Aamir had lauded Shah Rukh's efforts in making Ra.One and had further called the Ra.One jokes to be in poor taste. "Yes, it was nice" Shah Rukh, who is usually ready with witty words, merely mumbled.

How can the badshahforget the verbal volleys that he and Aamir had had in the past? Remember Aamir wrote on his blog few years back about 'a certain Shah Rukh licking his feet and he (Aamir) feeding biscuits...' Probably, Shah Rukh must be doubting Aamir's intentions in being so nice to him this time.

City seek to put controversies in the past

Posted in : Sports

(added few months ago!)

Manchester City are looking to move on from their recent off-field controversies and focus firmly on the chase for silverware this season after Carlos Tevez and Kolo Toure yesterday both opted not to challenge disciplinary action taken against them by the club.

Tevez had been expected to contest City’s ruling that he was guilty of misconduct in the UEFA Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich on 27 September, but the deadline for lodging an appeal passed on Tuesday with the striker understood to have chosen not to do so.

Meanwhile, the club announced that Toure has accepted a fine of six weeks’ wages relating to his failed drug test earlier this year, adding that they “now wish to draw a line under this matter and focus on the season ahead.”

The Blues are currently five points clear at the top of the Premier League after 11 games, and well in contention to qualify for the knockout rounds of what is their maiden Champions League campaign.

Tevez troubles
City have had little problem in terms of results of late, but it has certainly not been a trouble-free period. The club last month fined Tevez four weeks’ wages, later reduced to two weeks’ following intervention by the Professional Footballers’ Association, after a disciplinary panel found the player guilty of five breaches of contract relating to his behaviour on the bench during the match in Munich. He was also suspended for two weeks – although that was deemed to have already been served – and given a written warning as to his future conduct.

The 27-year-old was accused by manager Roberto Mancini of refusing to come on as a substitute during the second half of the 2-0 loss at the Allianz Arena, but Tevez denied the allegation and blamed a misunderstanding, insisting he had merely refused to warm up – something he felt unnecessary as he had already done so.

He was suspended for two weeks then trained alone while the matter was investigated, and on 25 October City announced they were upholding a charge of misconduct against him based on the panel’s findings. Tevez was given 14 days to appeal, but it now seems the Argentina international has accepted his punishment.

His future with City remains unclear, although Mancini has suggested the forward – who was the club’s top scorer and skipper last term as they won the FA Cup, but has fallen out of favour since his failed attempt to secure a transfer over the summer – could yet return to the team if he apologises.

Côte d’Ivoire defender Toure was handed a six-month ban by the Football Association in May, backdated to 2 March, after he tested positive for a prohibited substance. The 30-year-old, who claimed the positive test came as a result of taking his wife’s diet pills, made his playing comeback from the suspension in September but last week had an internal disciplinary hearing at City, leading to the club’s announcement about his fine yesterday.

Peter Roebuck was a brilliant writer and brave batsman, but he was never destined to live an easy life

Posted in : Sports

(added few months ago!)

What made him consider all outcomes bleak enough to launch himself from the sixth floor of a Cape Town hotel on Saturday night is not yet fully understood, only that the fall ended a life as troubled as it was rich with talent. Suicide is something Roebuck, 55 when he died, predicted would never take him, though those who had known him since his youth were less certain. In his foreword for the reprint of David Frith’s book on cricket suicides, Silence of the Heart, he wrote: “Some people have predicted a gloomy end for this writer. One former colleague said so to my face in September 1986. It will not be so. The art is to find other things that matter just as much as cricket, which stretch you just as far.

Peter Roebuck was a brilliant writer and brave batsman, but he was never destined to live an easy life

“Certainly a man needs beliefs. Principles are not enough. But belief can spring from satisfaction in his own work, for to believe in your self is an act of faith. Since 1983 I have led a stable, remarkably untroubled life, and such vicissitudes as have occurred have been connected with cricket form rather than temperament.”

Roebuck wrote that early in 2001, a few months before the scandal of him caning three 19-year-old boys in his care in Taunton came to court and he was forced to admit common assault. Like his controversial move in 1986, when he replaced Somerset’s overseas players Vivian Richards and Joel Garner with Martin Crowe, a tempestuous time that saw him branded as “Judas” by Ian Botham, who left Somerset in protest, the stain never really faded. Time usually dilutes such things but with Roebuck, who shunned England as a result to become an Australian citizen based in Bondi, you sensed these were seminal moments in which the shame and controversy were accreting with age not dissipating.

Suggestions that he was gay have circulated since his playing days, but if true he has never acknowledged it to anyone I know. In any case, he did not crave partners on an equal footing but followers. An intense, driven man, Roebuck was never destined to have an easy life and in a way he resented those who did. He despised sloppiness of any kind, though that contradicts his hero worship of RJO Meyer, the controversial founder of Millfield School in Somerset, which Roebuck and his younger brother, Paul, attended on scholarships. Meyer, a former Somerset cricketer, would think nothing of gambling school fees on the stock market or a horse race, any winnings providing extra bursaries for the talented but less well heeled. Roebuck acquired Meyer’s educationalist zeal, setting up scholarships for the underprivileged in South Africa, but not his raffish touch.

Roebuck was a fine cricketer; a brave, organised batsman who could have considered himself unlucky not to have been one of Graham Gooch’s opening partners for England in the late 1980s. He probably came closest when asked to captain an England side, in which your correspondent also played, in two one-day matches against Holland in Amsterdam during 1989. England lost the first game but won the second, though the lack of faith in Roebuck was immediately apparent when Mickey Stewart, the coach, rushed up to journalists after the defeat and told them to discount everything Roebuck had said at the press conference.

He had the sharpest of minds (he took a double first in law at Cambridge) and, when the mood overcame him, a lacerating tongue as well. A brilliant writer on cricket for among others The Sunday Times and the Sydney Morning Herald, he was once accosted by Mark Nicholas, who penned a regular column himself at the time and informed Roebuck that they were the best cricket writers around. “Who told you that” quipped Roebuck, “your mother?”

I first encountered him on an Oxbridge tour of Australia in 1979/80, where he and Paul Parker, both playing club cricket in Sydney at the time, were drafted in to strengthen our team. Roebuck’s disdain for most of the opposition (he was a Somerset regular at this stage who had shared record batting stands with Viv Richards) was obvious and in one game against Monash University, he had completed at least two crosswords at second slip before we had bowled them out.

An acquaintance who played cricket at Cambridge with both of us once said Roebuck was destined to be a discontented soul, as a single lifetime was not long enough for him to achieve his ambitions. That he has not seen even one through suggests that any hopes he still had were suddenly replaced by an insurmountable wall of fear.

I'm proud of my porn collection: Ram Gopal Varma

Posted in : Show Biz

(added few months ago!)

Ram Gopal Varma is controversy's favorite child. Rather, the filmmaker courts controversy like a lover would woo the woman he's besotted with. It comes as no surprise then that the recent flick under his banner, " Bejawada" has ruffled a lot of feathers.

And in the typical manner in which an RGV story unfolds, the director has now been getting death threats. Now, the contentious suffix "Rowdilu," has been dropped from the title, but controversy surrounding the film just refuses to die. "Speculations are rife because of the title. Unlike " Raktha Charitra", I've never said that I am basing this film on the lives of real people. It is director Vivek Krishna's story and I never said that it is based on anybody," clarifies RGV.

But this isn't a first for the filmmaker who loves to kick up a storm. Almost all his movies have a strong foundation on controversies. For an observer, it's pretty clear - a successful publicity strategy. "When you are making a film on contentious subjects, naturally everybody will have an opinion. It's just that no one else has tried to do it. It is the public interest in the subject matter that creates controversies and not the film by itself," argues the director.

But if you thought that after all the mini storms in the tea cup, the film maker would refrain from the hullabaloo, then you are wrong. For Ram Gopal Varma, controversies are nothing but mere 'entertainment'.

"I find it (controversies) very entertaining, and I am sure the media thinks the same about it too," he says with a know-it-all smile. But being called all sorts of derogatory names must get under his skin at some point? "Well, I've been called names all the time. The media calls me Ramu. After a point, you just lose sensitivity to it. The fact that I just do not care seems to accentuate the point," he explains.

Having said that, one however, wonders how can someone be so oblivious to criticism that comes his way almost all the time? Aren't most filmmakers known to be the 'please-all' types? "Well, I give a f**k about anybody. I make films because I love it and I want people to watch them. Whether they like it or not is another thing altogether. I am basically pushing my vision down their throats. Sometimes they might swallow it and sometimes they might just puke it out," he quips.

The industry has always been kind to success. Is that the reason why most people tend to forgive him for his jibes and remarks? "For me, success is about being able to get up in the morning and doing whatever you want to do until you go back to bed at night.

By that definition, I have been successful from the time I was five years old," he says in typical RGV style. Now that leads to the question, what happened when he was five? "My mother dropped me on my head," he retorts, poker face. Maybe, that was his eureka moment. "I don't believe in God or religion. I don't have any commitments and have never donated a single rupee for a cause. In short, I have done nothing that a good human being is supposed to do, yet I am able to do whatever I want to do. I just enjoy every second of my life because I know exactly who I am and what I want."

So how does RGV enjoy 'every single moment'? "It is all about pleasing my senses - be it listening to music, making films or looking at a beautiful woman," he says. And he doesn't stop at that. For the maverick, material possessions too are of utmost importance. "My most valuable possession is my collection of porn," he says without twitching a facial muscle. One can't help but take the liberty of asking if there are any specific preferences in that department. "It's hard to classify porn, you see," he retorts.

With so many movies under his belt, one can't help but ask why hasn't he made a love story yet. "I want to make a love story soon. It will be gritty and will break all conventions about how love stories are made traditionally," he says.

"I live for today and don't think about yesterday unless it's about reliving a pleasurable memory. I don't think about tomorrow because I want it to surprise me, if it doesn't, I will try to surprise myself, I live like that," he says before signing off.

‘Veena Malik ka Swayamvar’ stuck in controversies

Posted in : Show Biz

(added few months ago!)

So after Rakhi Sawant, Rahul Mahajan and Ratan Rajpoot, it’s the turn of Veena Malik to be a part of Imagine TV’s Swayamvar series. Wedding or not, one thing the show guarantees is a good amount of publicity for everyone associated with it. So how could drama queen Rakhi not be a part of the action? Giving her verdict on the new bride, though no one bothered to ask her for one, Ms Sawant said that Veena is not the right choice for the show and won’t work with the masses since she is a Pakistani. Well, Ratan is an Indian and she didn’t work all that well, either. Anyway, another buzz doing the rounds of tellytown is that the makers of the show have reworked their contract with Veena. They have apparently added a particular clause that states that if Veena weds one of the aspirant grooms, she will get an extra Rs. 1.5 crore on top of her Rs. 3 crore fee. That’s a whopper!

‘Veena Malik ka Swayamvar’ stuck in controversies

The show claims that the stars will meet their soulmates, but that is yet to happen for the female actors. While Rahul, the only male celebrity to be a part of the show, happily wed his chosen bride Dimpy Singh at the end of the show, Rakhi’s wedding plan went kaput and Ratan has kept mum on the topic. But hey, when you are paid a hefty amount even for getting disappointed, who cares, right? It was also rumoured that Rahul very successfully lived up to the label of a wife-beater by thrashing Dimpy. Since then he has been trying to convince people and shout from the roof tops (err we meant random reality shows), that he is a changed man and he loves his wife. Well, we also hear that Veena will have Ashmit Patel, her co-contestant from Bigg Boss, by her side to help her choose her beau/ husband. Well, as yet another tale of a girl searching her knight in shining armour unfolds pretty soon, we are sure Ms Malik out there is all set with glycerin in her eyes and phony emotions, to deceive us of course!
