Oprah Winfrey is now facing one of the biggest controversies of her life as she allegedly rigged the result of her own reality talent show contest.
The controversy has risen when just last Tuesday, the vote of Zach Anner, the favorite among the other 6,000 contestants, was dramatically surpassed by Dr. Phyllis votes.
Dr. Phyllis’ votes substantially exceeded that of Anner’s by 300,000 in 20 minutes and 600,000 in an hour. This change raised red flags among those who closely watched the show. It was called suspicious and unfair, thus the surfacing of nasty rumors.
The talent show called “Your Own Show: Oprah’s Search for the Next TV Star”, which was launched by the Queen of talks show herself, was created to find the one who is deserving to replace Oprah Winfrey as a talk show host.
The online competition encouraged everyone to send out their video entries if they wanted to host on Oprah’s new cable network called OWN (a TV network that is scheduled to launch by January next year).
However, the controversy threatens to halt the take off of the queen’s TV network as its talent show collided with a controversy of vote fixing done by OWN and Ms. Winfrey herself.
Issues of racism surfaced too when Oprah allegedly sided the black woman contestant called Dr. Phyllis Wick Turner against a handicapped white man named Zach Anner.
But Oprah supporters all claim this issue is nothing but a nasty rumor. Defending the queen, one supporter believes that Oprah is innocent against all the nasty claims and wrote in a blog “She (Oprah) has always prided herself on her ethics and morals. Just about anyone who has ever worked with Oprah will tell you she is one of the kindest, most generous, nicest and most honest people you’ll ever meet. Everything she does is above board and honest.”
The network itself said they will investigate this issue and altogether denied the claims.
“The online voting rules for the “Your OWN Show” video submission are carefully crafted to be fair to everyone,” a rep for the OWN Network said in an interview. “Any allegations of impropriety will be investigated and the appropriate actions taken to keep the process unbiased.”
Geekosystems, a website that independently conducted investigations for the issue said that during the voting period last Tuesday, hackers began to mess with the website of where people are allowed to vote for Anner and Phyllis.
Geekosystems identified that the source code for Phyllis’s “vote” button was altered. Some fans, who have been voting online during the time Phyllis’ votes suspiciously surged, have also claimed that Anner’s total votes and page views declined, while Phyllis’ rose at an exceptional rate.
But now that the controversy has exploded over TV news and the Internet, Anner’s votes are ahead that of Phyllis’ again. The handicapped man finally garnered a staggering number of votes that reached 6.5 million.
Mr. Anner himself does not believe in these nasty rumors that the queen of talks shows are in. He said in an interview, “(Oprah) is probably too busy building schools and helping children to even notice someone like me,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “I’m grateful for everyone’s continued support and to Oprah for giving me this opportunity.”
