Many problems, roadblocks and controversies for Rukh Khan's 'My Name Is Khan' in India have only added to the interest in the film not just here but overseas as well. Within three days of its release, the film has already turned out to be the largest weekend grosser Bollywood film ever in North America, recording an estimated $1.86 million in the US and Canada.
The previous record was held by Shah Rukh's musical extravaganza 'Om Shanti Om' which grossed $1.76 million from 114 theatres when it was released in 2007.
'My Name Is Khan' opened on 12th February 2010 with $444,000, rose 65 percent to $734,000 Saturday, and is estimated to dip 7 percent to $682,000 on 14th February 2010 on Valentine's Day.
Karan Johar, producer and director of the movie, says he was so much fed up with the typical Bollywood stuff - its item numbers, big sets etc,- that he decided not to be repetitive and change it altogether this time. He says he is very happy with the audience response to 'MNIK' at the red carpet premiere of the film at the Berlin International Film Festival on 12th February 2010.
Karan thanked the people of Germany for making them feel at home. They were anxious being in Berlin when they were releasing 'MNIK' in Mumbai. It was such an honor to be at Berlin and he thanked the festival director Dieter Kosslick and India programmer Dorothee Wenner and the distributor Fox.
Beyond the Indian and NRI markets, the film is expected to touch a harmony in countries with Muslim population, as it presents the pacifist Muslim point of view post-9/11. Initially, he was disappointed but later he was moved to tears when women all around him were crying.
